Advanced Wheels, Track and Rollers

This course enables learners to describe special-type roller, tracked and wheeled vehicles and the legal requirements relating to driving these vehicles on a road. Learners also describe driving procedures and general considerations for driving a special-type roller, tracked or wheeled vehicle safely on a road; and demonstrate procedures for driving a special-type roller, tracked or wheeled vehicle safely and legally on a road.

This course equips learners with the knowledge to describe special-type roller, tracked, and wheeled vehicles and the legal requirements for driving these vehicles on a road. Learners also develop the skills to describe and demonstrate safe driving procedures and considerations for operating these vehicles safely and legally on a road.

The course includes extended coaching and hands-on exercises in a VR simulator to perform common tasks. Learners are introduced to common hazards encountered on construction sites and best practice techniques to mitigate these risks.

Overview

Advanced Wheels, Track and Rollers course overview

Operating wheels, tracks, and rollers is a valuable role on any site, but the risk is too high to step into without the right training and endorsement. This Advanced Wheels, Tracks and Rollers course builds the knowledge and skills required to safely operate special-type vehicles and meet the requirements for W, T, and R endorsements.

We don’t treat licensing as a simple tick-box exercise. Instead, our industry-experienced trainers combine immersive training with practical, hands-on experience using actual equipment. Our VR simulators provide a realistic environment, allowing learners to experience site conditions, machine behaviour, and hazards—including factors such as terrain, weather, and machine response—before applying those skills in a controlled, real-world setting. The course also covers legal responsibilities under the Land Transport Act 1998 and NZTA endorsement requirements, ensuring learners understand what is required to operate these vehicles safely and legally.

IMPAC’s focus is on building capable and aware operators who understand both their responsibilities and the equipment they are operating. Participants step back into the workplace equipped to apply safe driving practices, carry out pre-start checks, and manage risks effectively when operating machinery.

Curriculum

What you'll cover

This course is designed for:
  • People who need the training and assessment pathway supporting W, T, and R endorsements for special-type vehicles.
  • Operators working with wheeled, tracked, or roller plant in construction, agriculture, transport, manufacturing, and civil environments.
  • Workers needing stronger knowledge of pre-operational checks, safe driving procedures, and site hazard awareness before operating machinery.
  • Maintenance staff and others responsible for moving, maintaining, or using plant and equipment as part of their work.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Advanced Wheels, Track and Rollers training approach

This course is built around the practical decisions operators need to make before and during work. Trainers use a mix of clear instruction, discussion, guided practice, immersive VR simulator exercises, and hands-on operation so learners can connect legal requirements with what safe operation looks like both on site and on the road.

A key part of the training is the use of realistic operating environments created through the VR simulator before learners move into practical machine use and assessment. Participants work through scenarios involving machine behaviour, changing site conditions, road use expectations, hazard awareness, and pre-start decision-making so they can build confidence and test judgement in a safer environment before applying those skills on the machines themselves.
