This course is now a prerequisite to doing the Height Safety Systems course (US15757).

Overview

Basic Heights - Harness Training course overview

A harness isn’t something worn just to tick a box. Like a seatbelt, it only works when it’s in good condition, fitted properly, and used as intended. This Basic Heights – Harness Training course builds the knowledge and skills required to safely inspect, fit, and use harness equipment when working at height.

We don’t rush through harness training just to help meet a compliance requirement. Instead, our industry-experienced trainers focus on developing a clear understanding of how to inspect equipment, identify faults, and correctly fit a harness for both the individual and the task. The course also reinforces how harnesses fit within the wider height safety system and the importance of having an appropriate emergency plan in place.

IMPAC’s focus is on building practical capability so workers can confidently use harness equipment as part of a safe working at height system. Participants step back into the workplace equipped to check their gear, fit it correctly, and ensure it is used in a way that supports safe work practices.

Curriculum

What you'll cover

This course is designed for:
  • Workers who use harness systems when working at height, including those operating from MEWPs, forklift cages, crane baskets, and similar platforms.
  • Industrial workers, supervisors, and team leaders who need to inspect, fit, and use harness equipment correctly as part of day-to-day work.
  • Health and safety personnel, managers, and compliance leads overseeing height safety practices who want a stronger practical understanding of harness use.
  • PCBUs and employers wanting workers to apply better judgement around harness checks, fitting, and emergency planning.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Basic Heights - Harness Training training approach

IMPAC’s working at heights training focuses on what learners need to do with a harness before they rely on it. Trainers work through equipment types, pre-use inspection, fit, adjustment, and the practical checks that help people recognise faults before they become a problem on site.

The course combines guided instruction with practical application, so learners are not left trying to connect the theory on their own. Participants work through examples and practical activities that show how harnesses fit within a wider height safety system, what can go wrong when equipment is poorly fitted or incorrectly used, and why emergency planning needs to be considered before work starts. The training also reinforces how equipment selection, inspection, and use support safer work at height rather than creating a false sense of security.
