Safe Working at Heights

This course is suited to people who work at height themselves and those who oversee that work. That includes construction and maintenance workers, roofers, scaffolders, warehouse and logistics personnel, tradespeople such as painters and electricians, and supervisors or team leaders responsible for planning or monitoring height-related tasks.

Workers carrying out tasks at height need the knowledge and skills to work safely, with the level of training depending on the task, equipment, and risks involved. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, PCBUs must ensure workers are trained, supervised, and competent for the work they carry out. This training supports safe planning, hazard identification, and fall risk control when working at height.

Yes, learners need written and spoken English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher to follow the course content and complete the assessment. If a learner may need additional support, please contact our team before enrolment to discuss available support options.

This course is available face-to-face or as a pre-recorded webinar, depending on the delivery option selected and workplace training requirements.

Yes, this course is available as a public course, for in-house delivery, and as an eLearning option. This gives organisations flexibility to choose the delivery format that best suits their workers, scheduling requirements, and operational needs.

The course runs for 1 day, allowing time for theory, practical height safety activities, and assessment requirements.

Yes, this course includes one on-course assessment to confirm learners understand the safe work practices covered during training.

Yes. Learners who successfully complete the assessment are awarded NZQA Unit Standard 17600, which covers safe work practices for working at heights.

IMPAC recommends refresher training at least every two years to help workers maintain safe working practices, hazard awareness, and confidence working at height. Some workplaces, clients, or industry requirements may require more frequent refresher training depending on site risks and the nature of the work being carried out.

No, NZQA unit standards do not expire from a learner’s Record of Achievement. However, workplaces may still require refresher training where work methods, equipment, or site risks change to help ensure safe working at height practices remain current.

• Closed footwear
• A driver’s licence or another form of photo identification

For public face-to-face courses, morning tea and lunch are provided. If you have dietary requirements such as allergies, vegan, or gluten-free needs, please let IMPAC know at least two working days before training. Please note that dietary preferences cannot be accommodated.
