Overview

Safe Working at Heights course overview

Every day across New Zealand, workers carry out tasks at height using ladders, EWPs, and scaffolding. It only takes a split moment for something to go wrong, with consequences that can have a lasting impact on someone’s life. This Safe Working at Heights course builds the knowledge and understanding required to safely plan and carry out work at height.

We don’t treat working at height as a compliance exercise. Instead, our industry-experienced trainers focus on helping learners understand how to identify hazards, apply the hierarchy of controls, and determine the most suitable systems for the task—whether that is fall arrest, scaffolding, or mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). The course also reinforces how to interpret and apply legislative requirements in a practical way that supports safe decision-making on site.

IMPAC’s focus is on building practical capability so workers and supervisors can approach working at height as a planned and controlled activity. Participants step back into the workplace equipped to identify risks, select appropriate controls, and ensure work is carried out safely.

Curriculum

What you'll cover

This course is designed for:
  • Construction and maintenance workers who carry out tasks at height as part of their role.
  • Roofers, scaffolders, painters, electricians, and other tradespeople working above ground level.
  • Warehouse and logistics personnel who use elevated work areas or access equipment.
  • Supervisors and team leaders responsible for overseeing height work activities.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Safe Working at Heights training approach

This Safe Working at Heights course focuses on the decisions that need to be made before anyone leaves the ground. Learners work through trainer-led discussion, practical examples, and realistic scenarios that show how height-related risks build up, where controls commonly fail, and what good planning looks like in day-to-day work.

The course gives people a chance to compare the systems used for different height tasks, including ladders, scaffolding, mobile elevating work platforms, and fall arrest methods. Rather than staying at the level of theory, the learning is grounded in how workers and supervisors identify hazards, weigh up control options, and choose an approach that is fit for the job in front of them.

By the end of the day, participants should be better placed to recognise when work at height needs tighter planning, stronger controls, or a different system altogether. That makes the training useful not just for gaining the unit standard, but for making safer calls back on site.
