17588 Apply for, accept, and carry out work according to a work permit in the workplace  3 4

This course enables learners to explain the types of work permits, understand the roles of those involved in the work permit system, and meet the requirements for receiving a work permit.

The course covers the preparatory requirements when applying for a work permit, accepting a work permit, and undertaking work under the permit. Learners will also understand and implement the controls and actions required at the end of a work period or upon completion of work.

Overview

Permit Receiver course overview

A signed permit does not remove the risks or significant potential consequences associated with high-risk work. Permit receivers are directly exposed to those risks, but as work pressure builds and risk fatigue sets in, it can be easy to fall into a “she’ll be right” mindset and overlook critical controls or changing conditions. This Permit Receiver course builds the knowledge and skills required to safely apply for, accept, and work under a permit.

We don’t believe in rushing through permits with the bare minimum to satisfy a compliance checkbox. Instead, our industry-experienced trainers guide learners to develop the skills to prepare for work, understand permit conditions, verify critical controls, and recognise when conditions have changed. The course also reinforces communication requirements and when additional controls are required for high-risk activities such as hot work, confined space entry, working at height, and excavation.

IMPAC’s focus is on building practical capability so workers can safely carry out their tasks under a permit. Participants step back into the workplace equipped to understand and apply permit conditions, recognise when work should not proceed, and ensure work is carried out safely.

Curriculum

What you'll cover

This course is designed for:
  • Company personnel and contractors who receive work permits in the workplace.
  • Workers involved in high-risk activities such as hot work, confined space entry, working at height, or excavation where work is controlled through a permit system.
  • People who need to understand permit conditions, communication requirements, and the controls that apply before and during permitted work.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Permit Receiver training approach

IMPAC delivers this course in a practical way that shows learners what permit-to-work requirements look like before, during, and after a job. Rather than treating the permit as paperwork to get through, facilitators focus on the checks, conversations, documentation, and control verification that matter when high-risk work is about to begin.

Learners work through a realistic permit scenario linked to activities such as hot work, confined space entry, working at height, and excavation. The training keeps attention on the decisions permit receivers need to make in real workplaces: understanding the scope of work, confirming conditions are right, checking critical controls are in place, and recognising when work should stop or be escalated.
