17596 Demonstrate knowledge of safety observer responsibilities in the workplace  3 8

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively perform the role of a Safety Observer in hazardous environments. Learners gain an understanding of how to identify situations requiring a Safety Observer, monitor safety during activities, and implement emergency response measures.

The course also provides a comprehensive understanding of hazardous environments and activities, the key responsibilities of a Safety Observer, and actions necessary to ensure a safe working environment.

Overview

Safety Observer course overview

A Safety Observer is not there to tick a box or simply stand by while work is carried out. In high-risk environments, relying on an “it’ll be fine” mindset is dangerous, as the Safety Observer is a critical line of recovery when something goes wrong. This Safety Observer course builds the knowledge and skills required to effectively carry out the role in hazardous environments.

We don’t deliver dry, theoretical lectures that don’t translate to the workplace. Instead, our industry-experienced trainers focus on the practical responsibilities of the role, including identifying when a Safety Observer is required, monitoring high-risk activities, and responding when conditions change. Participants develop an understanding of key responsibilities when observing hot work, confined space operations, and working at height, along with the actions required to initiate emergency response.

IMPAC’s focus is on empowering workers to support safe work in high-risk environments. Participants step back into the workplace equipped to monitor conditions, recognise when work should not proceed, and take appropriate action to maintain safety.

Curriculum

What you'll cover

This course is designed for:
  • Fire-watch personnel and workers involved in confined space operations.
  • Teams working at height or around other high-risk activities where continuous monitoring is required.
  • Health and safety officers, supervisors, and others responsible for overseeing hazardous work.
  • Personnel responsible for safety monitoring in industrial, construction, or high-risk operational environments.
  • Anyone expected to act as a Safety Observer and step in when controls fail or conditions change.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Safety Observer training approach

This course is built around the real decisions a safety observer needs to make while high-risk work is underway. Rather than staying at the level of theory, facilitators work through the role in practical terms: when a safety observer is needed, what they should be watching for, how they confirm controls are in place, and what to do when the job no longer looks safe.

Learners work through examples drawn from hot work, confined space entry, and working at height so they can see how the role changes with the task and the environment. The training focuses on maintaining situational awareness, recognising when conditions are changing, communicating concerns early, and understanding when work needs to stop until controls are restored.
