Fire Extinguisher

This course is suited to workers, supervisors, safety personnel, and anyone who may need to use a fire extinguisher during a workplace emergency. It is particularly useful in workplaces where people may need to respond quickly to a small fire, support evacuation procedures, or understand the safe use of different extinguisher types.

Workers who may be expected to use a fire extinguisher or respond during an emergency should be trained so they can do so safely and confidently. While there is no legal requirement for every worker to complete fire extinguisher training, workplaces still need to ensure people understand emergency procedures and the safe use of extinguishers where relevant to their role.

Yes. Learners need written and spoken English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher to follow the course content and complete the assessment. If a learner may need additional support, please contact our team before enrolment to discuss available support options.

This is a half-day course and is often scheduled alongside Fire Warden training on the same day.

Yes, this course includes one assessment with a practical activity to confirm learners can apply fire extinguisher selection and safe response techniques appropriately.

Yes. This course covers NZQA Unit Standards 3271 and 4647, which relate to using portable fire extinguishers and responding safely to workplace fire emergencies.

You will learn how to recognise common fire classes, select the right extinguisher or hose reel, and respond safely in the early stages of a fire. The course also covers basic fire science, fire suppression techniques, and the practical judgement needed to decide when it is safe to act and when evacuation is the safer option.

Learners who successfully complete the assessment can achieve NZQA Unit Standards 3271 and 4647 and will also receive a Certificate of Competency from IMPAC.

IMPAC recommends refresher training at least every two years to help people maintain confidence using fire extinguishers and responding appropriately during workplace fire emergencies. Some workplaces, clients, or industry requirements may require more frequent refresher training depending on workplace risks and emergency procedures.

Yes, this course is available for in-house delivery nationwide. It’s a practical option for organisations wanting teams trained together while building a consistent understanding of workplace fire equipment and emergency response procedures.

For public face-to-face courses, morning tea is provided, including tea, coffee, and biscuits. If you have specific dietary requirements (such as allergies, vegan, or gluten-free), please contact IMPAC at training@impac.co.nz at least two working days before training. Please note that dietary preferences cannot be accommodated.

Pricing depends on the delivery method.

In-house: $1500 + GST for up to 12 persons, with additional persons charged at $140 + GST each (maximum of 14).

Public (face-to-face): $140 + GST per person.
