Fire Warden course overview

Frequently asked questions
This course is suited to people appointed as fire wardens, as well as supervisors, team leaders, managers, and HR or safety personnel involved in workplace emergency preparedness. It is particularly useful where someone may need to lead an evacuation, support fire drills, or coordinate emergency response activities.
Workplaces that appoint fire wardens need to ensure those people understand their responsibilities and can carry out emergency procedures effectively. While there is no legal requirement to complete a specific fire warden course, training is commonly used to help wardens manage evacuations, communicate during emergencies, and support workplace emergency plans.
No previous fire warden experience is required. Learners do need written and spoken English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher to follow the course content and complete the assessment. If a learner may need additional support, please contact our team before enrolment to discuss available support options.
This course is available face-to-face or as a pre-recorded webinar, giving learners flexibility in how they complete the training.
The course takes half a day, covering core fire warden duties, evacuation requirements, and communication responsibilities.
Yes, this course includes one assessment covering fire warden responsibilities, evacuation procedures, and appropriate actions during drills and emergencies.
Learners who successfully complete the assessment can achieve NZQA Unit Standard 18408 and will also receive a Certificate of Competency from IMPAC.
IMPAC recommends refresher training at least every two years so fire wardens remain confident with evacuation procedures, communication responsibilities, and emergency response roles. Some workplaces, clients, or industry requirements may require more frequent refresher training, particularly where workplace risks, staffing, layouts, or emergency arrangements change.
Yes, this course is available for in-house delivery nationwide. In-house training can help organisations train multiple wardens together and support a more consistent approach to workplace evacuation procedures and emergency responsibilities.
