Overview

Workplace First Aid - Level 1 course overview

Having a first aid certificate filed away doesn’t help if someone is injured or becomes unwell and no one knows what to do next. In an emergency, hesitation or uncertainty can make a situation more difficult. This Workplace First Aid – Level 1 course is designed to give learners the essential skills and confidence to respond to common workplace and community emergencies.
 
We don’t rely on lecture-style training. Our industry-experienced instructors guide learners through practical, scenario-based activities that reflect real situations. Participants develop the skills to assess an incident, manage hazards, and provide first aid for injuries and sudden illness. The course includes CPR and AED use, managing choking, controlling bleeding, and recognising common medical conditions such as asthma, seizures, and stroke. Learners practise applying the DRSABCD approach and responding appropriately until professional help arrives.
 
IMPAC’s focus is on building capable people who can step in and provide first aid when it matters. Participants leave with a clear understanding of how to respond safely, provide initial care, and support better outcomes for those involved. Your team steps back into the workplace or community with the confidence to act and provide assistance when needed.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Workplace First Aid - Level 1 training approach

This training is delivered as practical first aid learning, not a theory-heavy session. Facilitators use guided discussion, demonstrations, and realistic workplace and community scenarios so learners can practise how to assess an incident, make the area as safe as possible, and decide what to do next under pressure.
 
Across the day, participants work through CPR, AED use, choking response, bleeding control, and responses to common medical emergencies. The focus is on helping people apply first aid calmly and clearly in the kinds of situations they are most likely to face, so the learning feels useful the moment they are back at work or supporting others in the community.

Yes, learners need written and spoken English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher, and must be physically able to perform CPR. This includes kneeling on the floor and taking part in hands-on activities. If a learner has physical limitations or may need additional support, please contact our team before enrolment to discuss available options.

This course runs for 1 day. That time is used for practical instruction, guided scenario work, CPR and AED practice, and assessment activities.

Yes, this course includes one assessment for NZQA Unit Standards 6401 and 6402.

Learners who successfully complete the assessments can achieve NZQA Unit Standards 6401 and 6402 and will receive a Certificate of Competency from IMPAC.

IMPAC recommends refresher training at least every two years to help maintain first aid knowledge, practical response skills, and confidence responding to workplace emergencies. Some workplaces, clients, or industry requirements may require more frequent refresher training depending on operational risks and workplace requirements.

No, NZQA first aid unit standards remain on a learner’s Record of Achievement and do not expire. However, many workplaces and industries expect learners to keep their first aid knowledge and practical response skills current through ongoing training.

Yes, this course is available for in-house delivery nationwide. In-house training can help organisations train workers at their own site while reducing staff travel and disruption to daily operations.

  • Practical clothing suitable for kneeling and hands-on activities
