Overview

Fire Warden Refresher course overview

Skills and knowledge can fade over time, particularly when they are not used regularly. For fire wardens, this can impact confidence and how effectively they respond when an emergency occurs. This 2-hour Fire Warden Refresher course is designed for fire wardens to revisit and strengthen their ability to respond effectively and lead others during an evacuation.

We move away from compliance-focused refreshers that rely on simply re-reading procedures. Our industry-experienced trainers guide learners through the key elements of emergency response, reinforcing evacuation requirements, communication, and coordination in a clear and practical way. Participants revisit their role in managing fire drills, leading evacuations, communicating under pressure, and ensuring people are accounted for, as well as refreshing their understanding of hazard awareness and how to liaise effectively with emergency services.

IMPAC’s focus is on supporting learners to maintain a consistent, high-quality approach to their fire warden responsibilities. Participants leave with a refreshed understanding of their role, the confidence to take action when it matters, and access to an IMPAC pocket guide to support them in their role. They step back into the workplace ready to apply their skills in an emergency to support safe, well-managed evacuations.

Curriculum

What you'll cover

This course is designed for:

  • Designated fire wardens who already hold Unit Standard 18408 and need to refresh their emergency response capability.
  • Team leaders, supervisors, and managers who may need to lead people clearly and calmly during a workplace evacuation.
  • HR professionals and safety coordinators who support workplace emergency preparedness and training records.
  • Organisations in workplaces such as hospitality, healthcare, education, manufacturing, and office environments where clear evacuation leadership matters.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Fire Warden Refresher training approach

This fire warden refresher is taught as a practical revisit of what wardens actually need to do before, during, and immediately after an evacuation. Rather than spending the session buried in policy language, facilitators keep the focus on clear responsibilities, confident communication, and sound decisions under pressure.

Learners work through realistic workplace scenarios and examples that reflect the points where evacuations commonly become disorganised. That includes raising the alarm, sweeping assigned areas, directing people to assembly points, accounting for workers and visitors, spotting hazards that could affect a safe exit, and handing over clearly to emergency services when needed.

The aim is to help people reconnect the formal requirements with what good fire warden practice looks like on the ground. Learners leave with a refreshed understanding of their role and a clearer sense of how to apply it in their own workplace.
