This course is built around the practical decisions operators need to make before and during work. Trainers use a mix of clear instruction, discussion, guided practice, immersive VR simulator exercises, and hands-on operation so learners can connect legal requirements with what safe operation looks like both on site and on the road.
A key part of the training is the use of realistic operating environments created through the VR simulator before learners move into practical machine use and assessment. Participants work through scenarios involving machine behaviour, changing site conditions, road use expectations, hazard awareness, and pre-start decision-making so they can build confidence and test judgement in a safer environment before applying those skills on the machines themselves.

Yes, learners need written and spoken English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher, and must hold a full New Zealand Class 1 driver licence. If a learner may need additional support, please contact our team before enrolment to discuss available support options.
The course runs for 2 days. That time is used to cover theory, practical machinery operation, VR simulator exercises, and assessment activities, while allowing learners to work through legal responsibilities, safe procedures, and practical application in detail.
Yes. This course includes two assessments: one theory assessment and one practical assessment. The assessments confirm learners can understand operating requirements and apply safe operating procedures in workplace situations.
Learners who successfully complete the assessments can achieve NZQA Unit Standards 16701, 16702, and 16703 and will receive a Certificate of Competency from IMPAC. Learners can also gain W, T, and R endorsements on their driver licence.
IMPAC recommends refresher training at least every two years to help operators maintain safe operating practices, equipment awareness, and confidence using wheels, tracks, and rollers in the workplace. Refresher training may also be needed where equipment types, site conditions, procedures, or operational risks change.
Yes. This course is available for both public and in-house delivery nationwide. In-house training can help organisations train operators together while relating the learning to their own equipment, work environment, and operating hazards.
