Mobile Elevated Work Platforms

This course is for people who need to operate a MEWP safely as part of their work. It is particularly relevant for workers and teams in construction, warehousing and logistics, arboriculture, landscaping, maintenance, utilities, film production, and emergency services, as well as those responsible for overseeing safe MEWP use on site.

Workers using MEWPs need to be trained, supervised, and competent for the equipment and risks involved in the work they perform. This training supports safer work at height by building practical operating knowledge and hazard awareness. Many workplaces and sites also require formal MEWP training before operators can use equipment onsite.

Learners need written and spoken English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher. Unit Standard 23966 is also a prerequisite for Unit Standards 23960, 23961, 23962, 23963, and 23964, so the training pathway needs to match the unit standards the learner is completing.

The course runs for 1 day. That time is used to cover the knowledge, practical operating activities using actual mobile elevated work platforms, and assessment requirements linked to the unit standards, while allowing learners to practise safe operating techniques and equipment controls.

Yes, this course includes one on-course assessment to confirm learners can apply the required knowledge and practical skills for safe MEWP operation in workplace environments.

This course covers NZQA Unit Standards 23966, 23960, 23961, 23962, 23963, and 23964, depending on the MEWP types included in the training. Together, these standards cover MEWP theory requirements, worksite preparation, and the safe operation of different MEWP categories.

Yes, the course covers rescue planning and permit requirements as part of safe MEWP operation. Learners build understanding of how emergency procedures, permit controls, and regulator notification requirements fit into work at height activities, rather than viewing MEWP operation as simply driving the equipment.

IMPAC recommends refresher training at least every three years to help operators maintain safe operating practices, hazard awareness, and confidence using mobile elevated work platforms in changing workplace environments. Some workplaces or safety-critical sites may require more frequent refresher training depending on equipment types, site conditions, and operational risks.

Yes, this course is available for in-house delivery nationwide. In-house MEWP training can help organisations train operators within the context of their own equipment, site conditions, and workplace procedures.

For public face-to-face courses, morning tea and lunch are provided.
