Managers Supporting Health & Safety Representatives course overview

Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) often return from training motivated and ready to contribute—but without clear support from their managers, that momentum quickly fades. What starts as enthusiasm can stall, and opportunities to identify risks, raise concerns, and improve safety are lost. This Managers Supporting HSRs course is designed to give leaders a clear understanding of how to work effectively with HSRs in their organisation.
 
This course is practical and engaging, without relying on dry, lecture-style delivery. Facilitated by experienced trainers, it focuses on building understanding through discussion and activities that reflect real workplace situations. Participants develop clarity around the role of HSRs, their powers and functions, and how managers can support them in a constructive and effective way. The course also explores communication, consultation requirements, and how to work together to manage risks and improve safety outcomes.
 
IMPAC’s focus is on supporting managers to build effective working relationships with HSRs. Participants leave with a clear understanding of their role, the confidence to engage with HSRs, and the tools to support meaningful worker participation. Our approach

+IMPAC's Managers Supporting Health & Safety Representatives training approach

This Managers Supporting Health & Safety Representatives course is delivered as a practical, discussion-led session focused on how managers and supervisors support worker participation in day-to-day work. Rather than relying on long presentations, the training uses guided discussion, realistic examples, and short exercises to help learners connect HSWA 2015 duties with the way they communicate, coach, and respond to HSR concerns in the workplace.

The facilitation focuses on how effective support for HSRs works in practice, including worker engagement, participation, communication, and the role of the HSR as a worker advocate. Participants explore common coaching and communication pitfalls, discuss what constructive support looks like, and work through how managers can contribute to healthier, safer workplace conversations without overcomplicating the process.

This course is delivered over half a day.

Training is available face-to-face nationwide or live online via Zoom for in-house delivery, or publicly as a pre-recorded webinar.
