ICAM Investigation Techniques

This course is best suited to workers, supervisors, managers, and health and safety personnel involved in workplace investigations. It is particularly useful for people in safety, operational, maintenance, and supervisory roles needing a more structured approach to investigating complex incidents.

ICAM investigation training is commonly used where workers, supervisors, or managers are responsible for investigating incidents and identifying underlying causes. While it is not specifically required for every worker under New Zealand law, training helps organisations build stronger investigation capability and support more effective incident management processes.

Some prior incident investigation knowledge or experience is recommended before attending. Completing Unit Standard 17601 is a suitable starting point and will help provide useful context for the course content and practical exercises.

This course is available face-to-face or live online via Zoom, giving organisations and learners flexibility around how they complete ICAM investigation training.

The course runs for 2 days, allowing learners to apply the ICAM investigation method through practical scenarios, causal analysis, evidence gathering, and structured investigation activities.

Learners will be able to apply the ICAM methodology to workplace incidents. That includes gathering and classifying information, reconstructing timelines, interviewing people effectively, using the PEEPO framework, and identifying underlying causes so corrective actions address system weaknesses rather than simply focusing on individual blame.

IMPAC recommends refresher training whenever investigators have not applied the ICAM methodology for an extended period or where organisations want greater consistency in investigation quality and root cause analysis. Refresher training may also be useful following significant incidents, procedural changes, or when investigation findings are becoming repetitive, inconsistent, or overly focused on individual actions rather than underlying system factors.

Yes, this course is available for both public and in-house delivery. In-house training can help organisations build more consistent approaches to ICAM investigations, evidence gathering, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
