Auditing HSMS course overview

A safety manual that looks perfect on a shelf won’t do your team any good if the processes aren’t actually being followed on the floor. This two-day Auditing HSMS course provides a structured approach to conducting internal audits of health and safety management systems, with a focus on verifying whether systems are working in practice.
 
We don’t rely on reading standards line by line. Instead, our industry-experienced trainers guide learners through the internal auditing process in a clear and structured way. Participants develop the skills to plan, conduct, and document audits of their HSMS, identify gaps in system performance, and understand how those gaps relate to their own workplace systems. The course also introduces recognised standards and organisational health and safety frameworks, including ISO 19011:2018, ISO 45001, and WorkSafe SafePlus.
 
IMPAC’s focus is on building capable internal auditors who add genuine value to your operations, rather than just ticking a compliance box. Participants leave with a clear framework for conducting HSMS audits and high-quality reference tools to support their ongoing work, along with the confidence to identify gaps and support continuous improvement in their workplaces.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Auditing HSMS training approach

IMPAC delivers this course as a practical internal-auditor workshop, rather than a session that only walks through standards line by line. Learners work through the full audit process from planning and evidence gathering through to findings and reporting, so they can see how a disciplined HSMS audit works from start to finish.
 
Sessions combine tutor guidance, discussion, worked examples, and workplace audit scenarios. Participants practise how to test whether documented processes are being followed, how to compare system intent with what is happening on the floor, and how to record findings in a way that is clear, useful, and credible.
 
That makes the learning immediately usable back at work. People leave with a stronger framework for auditing system performance, identifying gaps, and supporting practical improvement instead of just completing a paper exercise.

This training is suited to people who need to review how well a health and safety management system is working in practice. That includes health and safety professionals, internal and external auditors, and managers or team leaders responsible for monitoring system performance and improvement.

Health and safety audit training is not specifically prescribed by law, but organisations still need capable people who can review whether their health and safety management systems are working effectively in practice. Training is commonly used to help workers, managers, and internal auditors identify gaps, support due diligence, and improve overall HSMS performance.

Learners need written and spoken English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher. If a learner may need additional support, please contact our team before enrolment to discuss available support options.

The course runs for 2 days. That time is used to work through planning, conducting, and documenting HSMS audits using practical workplace examples and recognised auditing frameworks such as ISO 19011, ISO 45001, and WorkSafe SafePlus.

Yes. The course includes an off-course project that must be completed within 6 months of finishing the course. Extensions may be considered in extenuating circumstances.

Yes. This course covers NZQA Unit Standard 5619, which relates to auditing health and safety management systems in the workplace.

Yes. This course is available for both public and in-house delivery. In-house training can help organisations train teams together while aligning approaches to auditing, reporting, and improving their health and safety management system.

For public face-to-face courses, morning tea and lunch are provided.
