Most organisations work regularly with other organisations in order to achieve their objectives. Working with multiple PCBUs creates risk which needs to be managed, for business and legal reasons. On day one of this course learners will explore the process of working with other PCBUs, from scoping the work, initial engagement through to implementation, review and improvement.

Organisations frequently develop and implement plans in order to achieve their objectives. Achieving organisational objectives will always involve understanding and managing risks to the health and safety of people. On day two of this course learners will explore the theory behind planning and identifying benefits and limitations . Learners will develop a clear understanding of how to develop health and safety objectives through engagement and participation with a team. and have the opportunity to develop, implement and review a health and safety plan for a team, using an in-class scenario. This day focuses in particular on contract-specific health and safety plans.

Overview

Working with Multiple PCBUs course overview

Managing a site with multiple businesses requires more than assuming each organisation will take care of their own work. When duties overlap, a lack of coordination can lead to critical risks being overlooked or not effectively managed. This two-day course provides a practical understanding of how to navigate shared responsibilities and overlapping duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA).

We don't do traditional, passive compliance lectures. Instead, our industry-experienced trainers get learners stuck in, using examples and scenario-based group work that reflect the reality of New Zealand workplaces. Participants build genuine capability in managing work involving multiple PCBUs, from defining responsibilities and aligning safety standards through to applying contractor management processes, including contractor prequalification, and developing practical health and safety plans that support effective coordination on site.

IMPAC’s focus is on developing constructive problem-solvers who add genuine value to your projects, rather than just ticking a compliance box. Participants leave with a clear understanding of shared PCBU obligations and the practical confidence to apply contractor management processes and contribute to effective planning in their workplaces. Your team steps back into the business ready to manage overlapping duties and support a coordinated approach to health and safety across the site.

  • Project, procurement, facilities, engineering, and health and safety managers involved in contractor management activities.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Working with Multiple PCBUs training approach

This course is delivered in a practical, discussion-led way so learners can work through what shared duties look like in real workplaces. Rather than staying at the level of theory, facilitators use examples and guided scenarios to help participants think through contractor selection, scope definition, responsibility setting, prequalification, and the points where coordination between PCBUs often breaks down.

The training focuses on turning legal duties into usable day-to-day processes. Participants work through what good contractor management looks like before work starts, how health and safety plans should support the job rather than sit on a shelf, and how gaps can emerge when several organisations are involved in the same site or project. The emphasis stays on practical decision-making and coordination in the kinds of operational, maintenance, shutdown, and project environments where overlapping duties need to be actively managed.
