This course equips learners with the knowledge to manage the risks created when multiple organisations (PCBUs) work together. Learners will explore the process of working with other PCBUs, from scoping and engagement through to implementation, review, and improvement.

Learners gain a clear understanding of:

  • Duties and obligations as a PCBU.
  • Overlapping duties and how to address them.

This course uses scenario-based activities and offers practical solutions to potentially challenging and costly problems.

Overview

Contractor Management course overview

Managing contractors requires more than signing a piece of paper and assuming everything will be taken care of. Without a clear understanding of responsibilities and how organisations work together, risks may not be effectively managed. This one-day course provides a practical introduction to contractor management, including how the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) applies when engaging and working with contractors and other PCBUs.

We don't do ‘death by PowerPoint’ or dry compliance lectures. Instead, our industry-experienced trainers get learners stuck in, using examples and scenario-based group work that reflect the reality of New Zealand workplaces. Participants build genuine capability in contractor management, from understanding PCBU relationships and defining responsibilities through to applying contractor management processes that support safe and effective work.

IMPAC’s focus is on building constructive problem-solvers who add genuine value to your operations, rather than just ticking a compliance box. Participants leave with a clear understanding of their shared obligations and the competent confidence to align external contractors with your internal safety standards. Your team steps back into the business ready to manage shared risks and support a coordinated approach to health and safety on site.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Contractor Management training approach

This course is built around the decisions people actually need to make when contractors come on site, work alongside internal teams, or operate across shared risks. Trainers use guided discussion, practical examples, and scenario-based exercises to help learners work through contractor scoping, clarify responsibilities between PCBUs, and spot where coordination can break down.

Rather than staying at the level of theory, the course helps learners apply a workable contractor management process from engagement through to implementation, review, and improvement. That means participants leave with a clearer way to assess contractor capability, define expectations, and support safer day-to-day working relationships across the job.
