Health & Safety Leadership for Executives course overview

Executive teams set the culture and directly influence how risk is managed across their organisation. When there is a gap between what they think is happening and what is actually occurring on the ground, critical risks can go unmanaged. This Health & Safety Leadership for Executives workshop is designed to support Chief Executives and senior leaders to proactively lead health and safety within their organisation.
 
This is not a generic, off-the-shelf session. Facilitated by senior health and safety professionals, the workshop is tailored to your organisation and its operational context. Through structured discussion and real-world scenarios, participants develop a clear understanding of their responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, and how to influence performance through effective leadership. The session focuses on interpreting performance indicators, understanding incident causation, and ensuring that critical risks are being actively managed—not just reported.
 
IMPAC’s focus is on supporting executives to take an active role in shaping their organisation’s culture. Participants leave with a clearer understanding of how to influence systems, support their teams, and drive consistent improvement. Our approach

+IMPAC's Health & Safety Leadership for Executives training approach

IMPAC delivers this workshop as a facilitator-led session that keeps the conversation practical and relevant to senior decision-makers. Rather than loading the room with theory, the training uses structured discussion, realistic examples, and guided reflection to help leaders connect legal duties with what strong health and safety leadership looks like in day-to-day business.
 
Participants work through the questions that matter at executive level: how critical risks are identified and monitored, what meaningful performance indicators look like, how incident causation should be understood, and where leadership influence has the biggest impact. The emphasis is on helping executives test assumptions, ask better questions, and build confidence in the conversations they need to have with their teams.
 
By the end of the session, learners should be better equipped to lead health and safety in a way that is visible, informed, and grounded in how work actually happens across the organisation.

It is especially useful for people responsible for setting expectations, reviewing critical risks, and testing whether health and safety systems are working in practice. Executives and senior leaders need to understand their health and safety responsibilities well enough to exercise due diligence and support effective risk management within the organisation. While this specific course is not prescribed as mandatory under New Zealand law, executive health and safety training is commonly used to strengthen leadership capability, governance oversight, and informed decision-making.

No prior health and safety training is required for this course. It is designed for executive leaders who need a clearer understanding of their role in health and safety, even if they have not completed technical safety training before. Familiarity with your organisation’s current risks and reporting will help provide useful context for the discussion.

This course is currently available for in-house delivery only. In-house training can help executive teams build a more consistent understanding of leadership responsibilities, critical risk oversight, and organisational health and safety performance.

The course runs for half a day, allowing executive teams to work through leadership responsibilities, critical risk concepts, and the key questions leaders should be asking about health and safety performance.

Executives learn how to lead health and safety more confidently and effectively within their organisation. The workshop covers HSWA duties, health and safety culture, hazard and risk management concepts, incident causation, and the use of performance indicators. The focus is on helping leaders ask better questions, interpret what they are seeing more critically, and support stronger health and safety decision-making across the business.
