Our approach
+IMPAC's Health & Safety Committees training approach
This course is run as practical skills training rather than a lecture about committee paperwork. Facilitators use discussion and scenario-based activities to show learners how effective committees prepare for meetings, keep conversations on track, and turn issues raised by workers into actions that can actually be followed through.
Across the day, participants work through agenda planning, meeting roles, communication challenges, and the kinds of situations that commonly slow committees down, such as unclear responsibilities, drifting discussions, or differing views in the room. The focus is on helping people practise good meeting habits, stronger participation, and sound judgement so the committee can support real health and safety improvement back at work.

This training suits Health and Safety Committee members and Health and Safety Representatives who need to participate effectively in workplace committee processes. It is also useful for chairs, coordinators, managers, and others supporting worker engagement who want committee meetings to be more focused, constructive, and useful.
A Health and Safety Committee is not required in every New Zealand workplace, but one must be established if requested by a Health and Safety Representative or by five or more workers. These requirements sit under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and related worker participation regulations.
Health and Safety Committee members need to understand how worker participation, consultation, and committee processes contribute to safer workplaces. While committee training is not always specifically required, training is commonly used to help committees run effectively, contribute to risk management discussions, and support practical health and safety improvements.
Learners need written and spoken English equivalent to NCEA Level 1 (Year 11) or an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher. If a learner may need additional support, please contact our team before enrolment to discuss available support options.
