Overview

Confined Space and Gas Detection Refresher course overview

Confined spaces are too important to let risk fatigue and bad habits slip in. When critical checks, controls, and monitoring become routine, it’s easy for standards to drop without anyone noticing. This Confined Space and Gas Detection Refresher course is designed to help learners maintain their capability to work safely in these high-risk environments.

We move away from refreshers that rely on simply revisiting theory. Our industry-experienced trainers guide learners back through the key elements of confined space work, including entry processes, gas detection, permit requirements, and monitoring expectations. Participants revisit how to identify hazards, apply control measures, use gas detection equipment, and interpret atmospheric conditions to ensure work is carried out safely.

IMPAC’s focus is on supporting learners to maintain a consistent, high-quality approach to confined space work. Participants leave with a refreshed understanding of their responsibilities, the confidence to apply safe systems of work, and the knowledge required to carry out confined space tasks safely and consistently.

Curriculum

What you'll cover

This course is designed for:

  • Workers involved in confined space entry, including entrants and standby persons.
  • Supervisors, permit receivers, and permit issuers responsible for planning or authorising confined space work.
  • Team leaders and managers who oversee confined space work and need a clear understanding of entry controls, gas monitoring, and permit requirements.
  • Organisations that want workers to revisit safe entry processes before standards drift or shortcuts become normalised.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Confined Space and Gas Detection Refresher training approach

This Confined Space and Gas Detection Refresher course is built around the decisions people need to get right before and during entry. Learners revisit permit steps, hazard controls, and atmospheric testing requirements through guided discussion, worked examples, and practical scenarios that reflect real confined space tasks.

The facilitation focuses on recognising where things typically go wrong: missed checks, poor interpretation of gas readings, assumptions about ventilation, or gaps between the permit and what is happening on site. Trainers help learners work back through these points so they can test their judgement, refresh safe routines, and spot issues earlier.

Participants also revisit the use of gas detection equipment and the interpretation of oxygen, flammable, and toxic gas readings. The aim is not just to remember the theory, but to leave ready to apply it consistently in day-to-day confined space work.

Further study options

If you’re continuing your learning journey in health and safety, the unit standards you already hold can contribute towards IMPAC’s Certificate in Applied Workplace Health and Safety Practices (Level 3), which leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety Practice (Level 3).

This refresher course supports you to revisit and apply that knowledge in practice, helping you maintain capability while continuing to work towards a recognised qualification over time. To learn more, click here, or to enrol, click here.

This programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under section 439 of the Education and Training Act 2020, and Impac Services Limited is accredited to provide it under section 441 of the Education and Training Act.
