Duration: 1/2 day

This course equips learners with a basic understanding of how to manage unexpected spillages of hazardous substances safely and effectively.

Overview

Workplace Spill Management course overview

When a drum ruptures or a valve fails on site, hesitation or the wrong response can quickly make the situation worse. Using a spill kit without understanding the substance involved or the risks it presents can increase exposure and lead to further harm. This half-day Workplace Spill Management course is designed to build the knowledge required to respond safely and appropriately to unexpected spills of hazardous substances.

We don’t rely on generic guidance. Instead, our industry-experienced trainers guide learners through the key elements of spill response, including understanding hazardous substance properties and their potential impact on people and the environment. Participants learn how to locate and interpret critical information such as labels, GHS classifications, Safety Data Sheets, and signage before taking action, and how to follow site-specific procedures when responding to a spill.

IMPAC’s focus is on building capable people who can respond to spills in a structured and informed way. Participants leave with a clear understanding of how to assess a situation, access the right information, and take appropriate action to manage a spill safely. Your team steps back onto the site with the confidence that their spill response practices are clear, consistent, and ready to be applied when needed.

Curriculum

What you'll cover

This course is designed for:
  • Safety officers who need a clear process for responding to unexpected hazardous substance spills.
  • Site supervisors responsible for coordinating initial spill response and ensuring incidents are managed and reported appropriately.
  • Workers in construction, mining, petrochemical, confined space, and similar environments where spills may occur unexpectedly.
  • People expected to initiate spill response, use safety information correctly, and take practical steps to contain risk safely.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Workplace Spill Management training approach

IMPAC teaches spill management in a practical, decision-focused way so learners know what to do before they reach for a spill kit. The course works through how to identify the substance involved, check labels, GHS information, Safety Data Sheets, and signage, judge the immediate risks to people and the environment, and choose the safest next step.

Learners take part in guided discussion and simulated spill response activities that reflect what happens when a container fails, a transfer goes wrong, or a hazardous substance is released unexpectedly. Trainers show how site procedures, containment actions, communication, and incident reporting fit together in a real response rather than as separate pieces of theory.
