New year – new skills! New courses coming in 2024.

We’re pleased to announce our new partnership with Make UK to deliver two internationally recognised qualifications to +IMPAC clients.

For those new to the environment or sustainability profession, the IEMA Foundational Certificate in Environmental Management gives students a solid base of skills and how to apply them in their role. It covers all the areas of knowledge required to become an Associate Member of the preeminent industry professional body IEMA (AIEMA).

The ISO45001 Lead Auditor course provides attendees with the skills to be effective Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) Lead auditors. This course sets auditors up to lead audits and support their organisations to achieve a successful ISO 45001 accreditation.

Both courses are delivered by Make UK’s Martin Elliker, a seasoned professional with over 30 years’ experience in the field of health, safety, sustainability, and environmental management.

Martin has held director and senior management positions across diverse sectors, including automotive, logistics, oil refining, food and drink and engineering. His broad experience gives him an appreciation of the unique demands of client organisations and how H+S practitioners often need to wear many hats.

“H+S practitioners need to address a wide range of industry skills relevant to their sector of work however, there’s an increased expectation that they operate in more than just health and safety. They need to broaden their skills and experiences in other areas of the business i.e., sustainability, product security and development, financial understanding and commercial aspects and risk management concepts.”

Protecting our environment (sustainability) and protecting our people (H+S) are now inseparable in the modern business world. “By improving H+S, businesses can reduce the risks of accidents, injuries, illnesses, and fatalities, which will have negative impacts on the environment, society, and the economy. For example, preventing occupational diseases can reduce the demand for health care resources and the emission of greenhouse gases from transportation.” Martin comments.

“Similarly, by enhancing sustainability, businesses can improve the H+S of their workers and customers, as well as the communities and ecosystems they operate in. For example, using renewable energy sources can reduce air pollution and climate change, which can affect the health and well-being of people and wildlife.”

Both The IEMA Foundational Certificate in Environmental Management and the ISO 45001 Lead Auditor courses equip students with the relevant theoretical knowledge, practical skills and more importantly the understanding of how to apply these across an organisation.

Martin believes a good H+S professional can play an important part in promoting these principles throughout their business and demonstrating how having robust H+S and sustainability practices can create value and competitive advantage in the long term.

He says that adaptability and creativity are the keys to success. “In today's business world, being an EH+S professional is about more than just compliance, it requires communicating with people at all levels, collaborating with other departments and developing a broad overall business knowledge.”
