Untrained and at Risk: The Dangers of Neglecting Frontline Worker Safety

7 August, 2024  |  News

New Zealand's industries, from busy construction sites to seasonal horticultural operations, rely heavily on the skill and dedication of frontline workers. However, a lack of proper industrial training, taught by experts with extensive industry experience, puts these essential employees and those around them at risk. The consequences can be severe, affecting not only individual lives but also the productivity and reputation of entire industries.

When workers enter high-risk environments without adequate training, the potential for accidents becomes far more likely. Falls from heights, for instance, are a leading cause of workplace fatalities in New Zealand, accounting for approximately 19% of all workplace deaths annually.

Mishandling chemicals also poses a significant risk, with half of the health conditions notified to WorkSafe in 2022-2023 attributed to chemical exposure.

Additionally, the transport sector consistently ranks among the top industries for work-related fatalities, with a substantial number involving truck driving accidents. WorkSafe NZ data reveals an average of 15 deaths per year related to vehicle incidents in the workplace.

Proper industrial training is designed to equip employees with the knowledge and confidence they need to be both productive and safe. This training should go beyond theory, emphasising a safety-first approach and incorporating practical, hands-on exercises that simulate real-world situations. Additionally, recognised certifications earned through specialist training can open doors to exciting career opportunities.
