How are we monitoring health and safety? | IMPAC health and safety

Does the question of meaningfully monitoring and reporting on health and safety performance remain problematic for many businesses? Francois Barton, executive director of the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum, told Safeguard it does.

“Some people think that if we can come up with a bunch of uniform accounting standards [that work for every business] we should be able to do the same for health and safety, but it just doesn’t work like that,” says Barton.

Safeguard reports that he thinks businesses should be focusing their attention on “the things you put in place to make sure that bad things don’t happen,” which may differ significantly from business to business.

Barton believes that if boards understand their organisation’s critical and catastrophic risks, they can have meaningful monitoring and reporting programmes that focus on appropriate control measures.

What does your organisation have in place?

We agree with Barton and have assisted many organisations to get a better understanding of critical and catastrophic risks. We've helped organisations develop and present meaningful monitoring and reporting programmes so boards and officers can measure how they are doing.
