Health & Safety Leadership and Governance

Effective health and safety leadership and governance requires more than reviewing numbers and reports. Boards are expected to provide oversight of critical risks, but when that oversight relies on high-level data alone, there can be little visibility of how those risks are actually being managed day to day. Knowing what to look for, what to ask, and what good looks like in practice is not always clear. This Health & Safety Leadership and Governance workshop is designed to support directors and board members to better understand their responsibilities and strengthen their oversight of health and safety under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.

 

This is not a generic, off-the-shelf session. Facilitated by senior health and safety professionals, the workshop is tailored to your organisation and its governance context. Through structured discussion and real-world organisational scenarios, participants develop a clear understanding of officer duties, critical risk management, and the role of governance in shaping safety culture. The session focuses on what effective governance looks like in practice, including how to interpret performance indicators, understand incident causation, and ask the right questions to ensure risks are being effectively managed.

IMPAC delivers Health & Safety Leadership and Governance training as a focused workshop for people making governance-level decisions. Facilitators use guided discussion, plain-language explanation, governance scenarios, and practical prompts to help participants connect officer duties with the realities of board reporting, critical risk oversight, and organisational decision-making.

 

Rather than staying at the level of theory, the session works through what good governance looks like in practice: what questions to ask, what warning signs to look for, and how to read health and safety information without relying on lag indicators alone. Participants examine how incident causation, risk controls, and safety culture show up at governance level, so they can challenge assumptions constructively and keep attention on the risks that matter most.

This course is delivered over half a day, 2 hours, or 3 hours.
