Overview

Introduction to NZ H&S Legislation (eLearning) course overview

Reading a piece of legislation does not mean it will be understood. Without a clear understanding of legal duties, it can be difficult to know what is required in practice. This Introduction to New Zealand Health and Safety Legislation eLearning course provides a clear overview of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), including key duties, roles, and how the legislation is structured across the workplace.

We don't rely on dense, text-heavy learning. Instead, this eLearning course breaks learning into clear, structured modules that are easy to follow. Participants develop a solid understanding of legal duties, including the roles and responsibilities of PCBUs, Officers, and Workers, as well as worker participation and engagement, including the role of Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and Health and Safety Committees. The course also introduces the role of the regulator and how the legislation is applied in practice.

IMPAC’s focus is on building clear understanding that supports effective health and safety practices, rather than just ticking a compliance box. Participants leave with a strong understanding of how health and safety legislation applies to their role and the confidence to support compliant and effective health and safety practices in their workplaces.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Introduction to NZ H&S Legislation (eLearning) training approach

This Introduction to NZ Health and Safety Legislation (eLearning) course is designed to make legal duties easier to understand and apply. Rather than expecting people to work through legislation on their own, the content is broken into clear modules that explain what each duty holder is responsible for and how those responsibilities show up in real workplaces.

Learners work through practical examples and scenarios covering PCBU, officer, and worker duties, worker participation, and the role of the regulator. The focus is on connecting the wording of the Act to everyday decisions, such as who needs to act, what good participation looks like, and where documentation supports safer work.

Because the course is self-paced, learners can move through the content at a pace that allows them to absorb key concepts before completing the assessment. By the end, participants are better placed to recognise their responsibilities, understand how engagement and representation fit into the law, and support more consistent health and safety practice at work.
