Overview

Confined Space Entry course overview

A confined space can change while you’re in it. What was safe at the point of entry can quickly become unsafe if hazards aren’t properly understood and controlled. This half-day Confined Space Entry course is designed for workers, supervisors, and safety personnel who need to understand the requirements for safe entry under New Zealand guidelines.

We don’t rely on theory alone. Our industry-experienced trainers guide learners through the key elements of confined space entry using practical, site-based activities that reflect real workplace conditions. Participants work through permit processes, apply control measures, and understand monitoring requirements as they would on site. The course builds a clear understanding of confined space hazards, entry controls, and the roles and responsibilities of those entering or observing confined spaces.

IMPAC’s focus is on building capable people who understand how critical it is to get confined space entry right. Participants leave with a clear understanding of their responsibilities, the controls required to manage confined space risks, and how to work within permit and monitoring requirements. Your team steps back onto the site with the confidence to carry out confined space entry safely and consistently.

Curriculum

What you'll cover

This course is designed for:

  • Workers who may need to enter a confined space as part of planned maintenance, inspection, cleaning, or shutdown work.
  • Site supervisors and team leaders who need to understand entry controls, permit requirements, and observation duties.
  • Safety officers and health and safety personnel supporting confined space work in higher-risk environments.
  • Teams operating in construction, mining, petrochemical, and other workplaces where hazardous atmospheres or restricted-entry spaces are part of the job.
  • Organisations wanting staff to understand the practical requirements for safe entry before work starts and while entry is underway.

Our approach

+IMPAC's Confined Space Entry training approach

This training is built around how confined space entry decisions are made in real workplaces. Learners work through the sequence that matters on site: identifying the space, understanding what could change during the job, checking permit requirements, confirming controls, and knowing what needs to be monitored before and during entry.

The training uses practical discussion and worked examples to show where confined space entry can break down. That includes common issues such as incomplete hazard identification, weak permit discipline, poor communication between entrants and observers, and failing to recognise when atmospheric conditions can shift.

The result is a learning experience that helps people connect the rules to the job in front of them. Instead of leaving with abstract theory, participants leave with a clearer understanding of how to apply entry controls, roles, and monitoring requirements in day-to-day work.
